My first free pattern offering
Bulky Coat length Cardigan, women's 44. This is a coat length sweater with full length sleeves, and a square neck, single band collar.
I used Sugar and Cream cotton. Any yarn that has the guage 16 st. and 24 rows over 4 inches stockinette. You need a bulky machine. The body of the sweater is knitted on dial guage 6. I don't have a ribber so I usually rib by hand at the end or use a latchet hook to reverse stitches.
BACK
Cast on 102 stitches in WY on dial guage 6. Knit six rows with COR. Change to MY and knit 126 rows. Mark this row at both ends for armholes. Knit 66 more rows (192 rows total.) Cast off centre 32 stitches at back of neck. 35 stitches remain on each side. Knit 6 rows with WY.
FRONT LEFT
Cast on 52 stitches in WY on dial 6. Knit 6 rows, ending COR. Change to MY. Knit 126 rows, COR. Mark this row at RIGHT hand for armhole.
AT THE SAME TIME shape neck. Dec. 1 st at neck edge (left) next and every following 3rd row, 16 times more (35 stitches remain.) Knit 17 rows even.
LEFT FRONT Same as for right, reversing shaping.
BACK RIBBING
I hand knit. Knit one row even, decreasing 6 stitches evenly across row. Knit two inches ribbing on needle which will give you the look you want.
FRONT RIBBING. As for back, decreasing 3 stitches each side.
SLEEVES
Cast on 42 stitches on WY at dial guage 6. Knit 6 rows, ending COR. Change to MY. Knit 10 rows even, COR. Inc. 1 st at each end of next row, then every following 4th row 20 times to 84 stitches (91 rows). Knit 11 rows even. (102 rows) COR Cast off loosely. RIBBING Using needles which will give you the right look, knit one row even, casting off 5 stitches evenly. Knit for 3 inches. Cast off loosely.
SHOULDER SEAMS
Use backstitch to sew fronts to back along shoulder seams.
BUTTON BAND
This is tedious but cheaper than buying a ribber. Using closed edge method of casting on, and dial guage 0, cas on 7 stitches, leaving every other needle in NWP. Knit 39.2 inches, converting to rib with the latch hook as you go. Check that this length is sufficient when slightly stretched to go up cardigan front, from bottom of front ribbon, to centre of back. Rib more if necessary. Cast off and sew band to the left front. Mark positions for seven buttons, the first about 1/2 inch above the band bottom, the last one where the V shaping begins. The rest should be evenly spaced between these two, app. 3.9 ins apart.
BUTTONHOLE BAND
Work as for button band, working buttonholes at marked positions as follows: Thread off centre 1 st to WY, leaving the the empty needles in WP with latch open. When converting to ribbing, pick up the dropped st. at each buttonhole. Sew buttons at marked positions on button band. Sew buttonhole band to cardigan front.
FINISHING
Sew side and sleeve seams using invisible seam. Use backstitch to sew remaining seams. Sew in all lose ends.
PLEASE NOTE. Since this is cotton, the guage is based on a washed swatch. The garment may appear somewhat larger when knitted, but shrinkage has been taken into account. Old Lady Bishop
